Ways to avoid an all-nighter

Tuesday, February 07, 2012
As a prospective college student, you have probably heard about the dreaded all-nighter—those times when students skip sleep to prepare for a major exam. While these situations are typical for some students, with proper planning, the all-nighter does not have to be a staple of your college life.

According to a St. Lawrence University study, all-nighters usually do not result in the desired test grades for most students. When Pamela Thacher, associate professor of psychology at the school, analyzed the sleeping patterns and transcripts of 111 students, she found that two-thirds of subjects who studied all night also had lower grade point averages.

The Mayo Clinic, a not-for-profit medical research group, states that adults require between seven and nine hours of sleep each night. As a result, it really is not in your best interest to pull an all-nighter.

To avoid cramming late into the night, always start studying early. If you devote a specific amount of time to reviewing material each day, you can go to bed at a decent hour the night before an exam.

By studying early and often, you can avoid some of the problems procrastinators encounter. For instance, you never want to get to a topic you do not understand just a few hours before a test. By reviewing all of the course material in increments ahead of the exam, you have time to  go for extra help if you need it.

Regularly showing up for class and taking good notes also ensures that you are not calling your classmates the night before a test looking for information from the class you missed.

You should evaluate your study habits and ask yourself what works and what does not work for you. If you find that merely re-reading material is leading to mediocre grades, then ask your friends and classmates about their study strategies. You can always ask your professors for advice as well, or head to one of your school’s tutoring centers.

Different study techniques work for different students. If you find flashcards effective, use them. If it helps to highlight certain material, then light up your textbook. After a quick Internet search, you may even find a few Web sites that offer video or other content that can give you a better understanding of the subjects you are reviewing.

At the end of the day, if you stay organized and keep to a regular study schedule, you stand to have a successful, and most importantly, healthy journey toward completing your college major requirements.ADNFCR-16000756-ID-800703017-ADNFCR
