The importance of attending an accredited college

Friday, February 10, 2012
While searching for colleges you may come across the term "accreditation" or "accredited by" in a college’s description. A school’s accreditation is an indication that the college in general, or particular programs meet certain standards to ensure that you receive a quality education.

Schools can hold accreditation from regional, national or specialized accrediting agencies. These agencies are private educational associations that evaluate schools, upon the school’s request, and confer accreditation after a lengthy and thorough review process. Accreditation is not conferred by the U.S. Department of Education (DOE), however, the DOE recognizes the various agencies’ decisions.

While most post-secondary schools in the U.S. hold one or several accreditations, you may come across a college that is  unaccredited. There are several reasons for this. Some schools may be facing financial difficulties, while others are simply new and have yet to complete the accreditation process which can take several years.

Accreditation is not mandatory for a college to operate. However there are some things you should be aware of should you choose to attend an unaccredited institution. For instance, employers may be hesitant to hire you if your degree comes from an unaccredited college, especially if you are seeking employment in a field that requires licensing, such as education, accounting, or health-related fields. Also, if you start taking courses at an unaccredited school and decide to transfer into a university that is accredited, you may find that your credits will not carry over.

Furthermore, if you plan on applying for federal or state financial aid, you must attend an accredited school to be eligible.ADNFCR-16000756-ID-800705923-ADNFCR
