Join a college club or start a new one
| Tuesday, February 14, 2012 |
While the courses you take for your college major may satisfy your academic interests, they may not touch on your hobbies and personal passions. If this is the case, you are likely to find a club on campus to suit your recreational or creative interests.
Even before you arrive on campus, you should visit your school’s Web site and go to the "Activities" or the "Student Life" page where you can typically find a list of on-campus clubs and organizations. Some clubs may be similar to those you found in your high school, while others may by totally new to you.
For instance, student actors may be drawn to the theater company where they can perform in plays and skits or attend acting workshops. Movie buffs may hold screenings once a week as a part of an on-campus film society. Meanwhile, students who are looking to get away from campus on weekends may join an outdoors club.
In addition to exploring your school’s Web site, you may discover clubs by checking out the bulletin boards around campus. Many colleges host an activities and clubs fair at the beginning of each semester where you can preview the clubs and get information about scheduled meetings.
However, if you cannot find a student organization that interests you, consider starting your own. Once you have an idea for a club, see if anybody is interested in joining. Ask around in your dorm or in class. If your college has a discussion board on its Web site, or allows discussions on its Facebook page, bring your club pitch to the masses online.
When starting a club, it is important to have a membership base, as some schools require a certain number of committed members before they will register a student organization. In addition, one or more faculty members may have to provide approval or act as facilitator.
As part of the registration process, you will typically have to submit your club’s name and purpose, which will be laid out in its constitution. For schools, these steps are important, as in most cases, students use campus facilities for their meetings and activities.
Once the club has been approved, you will want to attract new members and assign roles. The president leads meetings, the secretary keeps track of what takes place during these sessions and the treasurer manages the organization’s funds.
No matter what your club is dedicated to, you stand to gain valuable experience that you can put on your résumé. Whether you serve as president or simply handle publicity, you are acquiring teamwork skills that will be useful in your career. At the same time, you have an opportunity to build lasting friendships with likeminded students.
