Coast Guard officer training program provides tuition assistance
| Thursday, January 19, 2012 |
If you are interested in a career with the U.S. Coast Guard after graduating from college, you may want to look into the College Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative (CSPI). This program provides financial assistance for college while helping you acquire essential skills that will benefit you throughout your career.
This scholarship program provides sophomore or junior undergraduates at eligible colleges with full funding for their final two years of college, according to GoCoastGuard.com. In addition, award recipients receive benefits such as medical and life insurance, as well as a monthly salary of approximately $2,200.
CSPI trains future officers who will advance to the Officer Candidate School (OCS) after completing the academic requirements for their college major. During the final two years of college, students receive training in the areas of management, law enforcement, navigation and marine science, which, in turn, can help them develop into young leaders.
Graduates of OCS will be commissioned as Coast Guard officers and be placed on active duty for three years of service.
As members of the U.S. Coast Guard, officers will be a part of a military organization that is committed to safeguarding the nation’s maritime interests. The Coast Guard’s official Web site states that on a typical day, this Homeland Security organization saves 12 lives, investigates 13 marine accidents, screens 720 commercial vessels and keeps 842 pounds of cocaine off the streets, among other acts.
